Description
English: A horseman from the steppes? Intensive trading relations contribute to how alien people far away are depicted in all cultures. These images which are notorious by mythology and stories do not always fit reality. In this way in Greece stereotypes of other peoples in Egypt and Persia developed. This statuette of a rider, the horse is lacking, was found in the Egyptian Memphis. The pointed beard and hat suggest this is an Asian rider from the steppes, but it’s unclear if it is a Scythian or Persian. Earthenware, Memphis (Egypt), 500-400 BC (inv. 7198)
Nederlands: Een steppenruiter? Intensieve handelscontacten dragen in alle culturen bij tot de beeldvorming over verre vreemdelingen. Gevoed door mythologie en verhalen kloppen deze beelden niet altijd met de werkelijkheid. Zo ontstaan in Griekenland, Egypte en Perzië stereotypen van “andere volken”. Dit beeld van een ruiter (het paard ontbreekt) is gevonden in het Egyptische Memphis. De puntbaard en -muts doen vermoeden dat hier een Aziatische steppenruiter is weergegeven, maar of het een Skyth of een Pers betreft is onduidelijk. Aardewerk. Memphis (Egypte), 500-400 v. Chr.
