.Here immense talus slopes extending upward more than five hundredfeet, are overhung by high precipitous walls of massive whitequartzite. Toward the east eud of the gorge, where the talus is lessprominent, the strata may be seen to descend slowly, the dip increas-ing to 24° E. at the Tuscarora-Clinton contact. At the western endof the gorge the dip is precipitous, the well-exposed Tuscarora stratathere i^lunging beneath the surface with a dip of 72° W. South of the Xational Road, Wills Mountain becomes graduallydeflected from its general course of S. 30 W., and for some distancebefore reaching Cresap runs nearly due south. At Cresap the Tus-.carora passes beneath the surface, and with its disappearance themountain becomes obliterated. One of theseanticlines has exposed almost one hundred feet of the Tnscarora andcan be traced for nearly five hundred yards in a sreneral sonth-south-west direction. The smaller anticline which lies a short distancesoutheast of this is not sufficiently individualized to be distinctlytraced longitudinally and is scarcely UKirc than sufficiently prdUiineutto bring the Tnscarora to the surface. In the northern part of the county east of the Tuscarora-Clintoncontact line east of Wills Motmtain the dip increases slightly butrarely reaches more than 40° E. West of the axis the dip in theClinton wherever exposed is great. Further west in the Helderbergand Oriskany formations several excellent exposures give a prevail-ing dip of 90°. This is admirably shown at the Devils Backbone near Corriganville, as well as at either end of the low cnlongatcdhill lying just west of the Ifarrows. Xcar the state line,
