erand closer adjustment of many streams in existence at the opening ofthe period. This was notably the case with Wills Creek, Fifteen-mile Creek and Town Creek. Xumbei-s of smaller streams whichcame into existence during this period stalled on yielding rocks andin later times have simply continued along their originally subsequentcourses. Towards the close of the i^eriod, however, many streamslost their finer adjustments by reason of their flood-plained condition. The best instances of this have been referred to already, viz.. TownCreek and Fifteenmile Creek. Other smaller streams seem to havebeen thrown out of adjustment by the influence of the broad flood-plain along the Potomac. This is notably the case with the streamsentering near Oldtown and also with Sideling Hill Creek. Thessstreams instead of joining the Potomac by the most direct line, whichis the rule, are deflected do^\Ti stream when within two miles or lessof the river. MARYLAXD GEOLOGICAL SUKVEY 53 THE SCHOOLEY PLAI>- STAGE. The gorge-entting period was inmignrated bv a general warpingand uplifting of die Shenandoah Plain, the uplift being greatest inthe southwestern districts and least in the east. The ShenandoahPeriod was inangnrated by a closely similar uplift of the SchooleyPlain. The Schooley Plain was produced in the same way as theShenandoah Plain. The main difference between the two featuresis the absence from the Schooley Plain of extensive mountain rangesor ridges looking down upon it. This resulted simply from the factthat the earlier period was of much longer duration, so that oppor-tunity was given for the complete reduction to the general level ofthe zones of resistant rock. Of this former surface there are nownumerous remnants to be found in the long even crests of the higherridges in the county. On account of the much greater erosionwhich this older plain has suifered, its traces are much fewer than arethose of the younger Shenand
