e Ohio valley. George Washington,in a letter to Colonel Bouquet, dated Camp at Fort Cumberland,2, August, 1758, says that the first good road for commercial inter-course between the traders of Virginia and Pennsylvania and theIndians along the Ohio was by way of Wills Creek (Cumberland),which place had been selected by intelligent Indians who had beenhired to choose the most favorable route of conimunication. liefurther states that the Ohio Company in 1753 ojwned the road at aconsiderable expense, and that in the following year his own troopsgreatly repaired it. In 1755 it was widened and completed by Gen-eral Braddoek to near Fort Duquesne. Early in the present centurythe USTational Road was surveyed and constructed, the military roadbeing in part utilized for this purpose. Later extensive surveys weremade for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and for the Baltimore andOhio Railroad, the latter reaching Cumberland in the year 1842 and MARYLAND GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.
