Real photo postcard. Postally used. Stamp intact. Cancellation date of 12 April 1906. Bought from an eBay seller in Berlin, Germany. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Außenalster THE ALSTER BASIN. Cambridge Tribune, Saturday, 15 September 1894, p. 2: Dr. George W. Nash, formerly of Cambridge, who is now in Hamburg ... says: .... "This basin gives to all Hamburg, rich and poor, a never-failing source of pleasure and interest. The many boat lines afford cool breathing trips during the hot months; these different lines run to different suburbs at a slight cost, and the trips are full of charm and interest, for the constant change of view brings continual pleasure; there are no dull miles in any of them; then the myriads of rowboats, sailboats, steam or naphtha launches all add to it. ... This outer basin is lined with villas of Hamburg's millionaires, promenades, driveways and gardens, and the land slopes down to the water. Hundreds of swans kept at the city's expense float lazily about or peck at the food offered them by the passer-by. A large pleasure garden and bathhouse, a boat clubhouse, an open bathhouse and a large pleasure resort, with music are the public institutions; while beautiful gardens, handsome buildings and Hamburg's finest residences are scattered all along the shore. The fact of this basin of water existing in the midst of the city is not generally known; and if it is known, is not realized. Many houses have small canals leading from it by their gardens, and all so favored have their rowboats and launch always at their garden gate." - cambridge.dlconsulting.com/cgi-bin/cambridge?a=d&d=Tr... |
