Summary
editDescriptionAltenburg-Stengel House, Buffalo, New York - 20211115.jpg |
English: The Altenburg-Stengel House, 17 Days Park, Buffalo, New York, November 2021. With its modest scaling, pair of round-arched widows nestled underneath the front gable of the roof (undergirded also with a raking dentil row), the elegant spindle balustrades and other decorative woodwork on the front porch, and lively color scheme, this two-story Italianate cottage is a quintessential example of the typical Victorian-era housing stock in Buffalo's Allentown Historic District. The house was built in 1868 as the residence of - and, indeed, was likely constructed by - German-born carpenter Augustus Altenburg (1836-1891), but he and his family only lived there for three years before selling it onward to its second owner, John A. Stengel (1841-1904). A longtime employee of the Courier Company who eventually rose to the position of plant foreman, Stengel resided at 17 Days Park for nearly 20 years, before his election to the post of Superintendent of the Erie County Almshouse in 1891 occasioned his family's move to that institution's sprawling campus near the city line, at what's now the South Campus of the University at Buffalo. |
