editDescriptionAlternanthera pungens plant4 (11680281075).jpg | Introduced, warm-season, ephemeral or perennial, prostrate herb. Stems are softly hairy, to 60 cm long and root at the nodes. Leaves are opposite, obovate to circular, 0.5–5 cm long, hairless except for scattered hairs on lower midrib and base of lamina, mucronate and petiolate. Flowerheads are ellipsoid, to 15 mm long and 10 mm wide. Bracts are yellowish, lanceolate and pungent. Flowering from spring to autumn. A native of South America, it is widespread in wasteland, caravan parks, orchards and recreation areas. Spines are a problem with dogs and stock but are particularly troublesome to humans and readily penetrate skin. |
