Perlahan fungsi pemerintahan menghilang dan seiring menjamurnya kegiatan perdagangan maka lahan untuk ruang terbuka publik pun lenyap. Saat ini sedang dalam wacana dikembalikan seperti semula dan bersama dengan Masjid Kauman dan Pasar Johar yang direkonstruksi pasca kebakaran diharapkan akan menjadi salah satu destinasi wisata terpadu di kota Semarang
