é uma das mais emblemáticas árvores de toda a Amazônia. É considerada uma das árvores mais altas da região, em ambiente natural pode atingir até 70 metros de altura e o tronco até 3 metros de diâmetro..As suas grandes raízes de sustentação, chamadas de "sapopemas", segundo dizem os índios que habitam as matas, ressoa longas distâncias um som grave, quando batidas com pequenos pedaços de pau, sendo por isto mesmo usado pelos povos indígenas em comunicação rudimentar, o "telefone" da floresta. Por causa de seu tamanho e de ser típica das áreas de várzea, precisa de raizes proporcionais a sua copa para que não acabe envergando, por isso é comum observar suas raízes no mesmo cumprimento dos galhos e a parte central atingir até 5 metros de profundidade. Também é conhecida pelos nomes de samauma e barriguda, por causa do acúmulo de água em suas raízes e troncos.
