DescriptionAmigone Funeral Home - fmr Wayland-Ramsdell House - Buffalo, New York - 20201019.jpg |
English: Amigone Funeral Home, 1132 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, New York, October 2020. A contributing property to the locally-listed, NRHP-eligible Linwood Historic District, this stately edifice serves as essentially a clinic on multiple types of Colonial Revival architecture simultaneously. The more common, Georgian-derived variant is exemplified in grand style by the symmetrical fenestration pattern of twelve-paned sash windows, the jack arches in the brickwork above those windows (look closely), the fanlight and sidelights framing the front door, and - above all - the majestic tetrastyle Doric portico facing Delaware Avenue, topped with a handsome Classical pediment to match those above the dormers and adorned with balustrades flanking the entrance. Meanwhile, the side-gabled gambrel roof (under which are tucked nifty Palladian windows) adds a touch of the Dutch Colonial to the mix. Longtime Buffalo Savings Bank executive John U. Wayland (1827-1919) had the house built for him in 1871, but it was substantially expanded and remodeled later on: the exterior as it appears today dates to c 1890, though Amigone Funeral Home restored the interior to its 1870s-era appearance upon their purchase of the property in 1992. (The one-story southern annex to the building seen at left was also built by Amigone in the '90s, though it does a fair job of complementing the architecture of the original portion.) Wayland continued living in the house until his retirement to California in 1902. Its next owner of significant duration was William Mayhew Ramsdell (1864-1948), publisher of the Buffalo Express, who resided there from 1905 through 1935. |
