A fine example of the Neoclassical architectural style that was pervasive at the time of its construction, the station served the New York Central Railroad on its famed Water Level Route beginning in 1914. A mid-90s proposal by Amtrak to demolish the station was averted when the city government purchased the building and began a nearly decade-long restoration process that brought back much of the building's old grandeur: amply proportioned arched windows combine with interior walls of light-colored glazed brick to provide an airy ambience to the interior, while bronze chandeliers and ornate ironwork around the stairways bring a bit of elegance.
