DescriptionAmy Johnson Memorial, Prospect Street - geograph.org.uk - 751988.jpg |
English: Amy Johnson Memorial, Prospect Street, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Amy Johnson (she's the one on the plinth, by the way) was born at 154 St. George's Road, Hull, on 1st July 1903. 325815 Amy achieved national fame during her own lifetime as a pioneer aviatrix. After many headline-making flights she drowned at the age of 37, crashing her plane in the Thames Estuary during World War II on 5th January 1941 while flying for the Air Transport Auxiliary of the British Armed Forces. For a couple of years there were hanging baskets along the canopy outside the Prospect Shopping Centre where Amy's statue stands, measured out in such a way that one of them hung right over the statue's head with the flowers hiding her face. Thankfully the flowers are now gone; Hull doesn't have many famous people so it seems a shame to cover them up. |
