Em 1898, a fazer fé no Power’s Guide de 1914, foi estabelecido a Este da foz do Ribeiro Seco o Atlantic Hotel, entretanto ampliado em 1913. A edificação original não se afastava das anteriores quintas de aluguer, mas a reconstrução desse último ano já apresentava um andar nobre com varanda corrida para Sul e um superior em mansarda. A proposta de Edmundo Tavares (1892-1983), que no ano anterior executara projeto semelhante para o vizinho Savoy Hotel, não alterava a volumetria e pressupunha somente reformular a entrada, dotando-a de um pórtico neoclássico exterior e, interiormente criar um átrio de entrada com receção, o que até então não existia. Em meados de 60 o conjunto seria totalmente demolido e no seu local levantado um importante edifício, então como Hotel Sotuma, da responsabilidade do arquiteto norte-americano Leonardo Leoncavallo (DN do Funchal de 11 de outubro de 1968, p. 1), mas depois entregue à cadeia internacional Sheraton e inaugurado 20 de novembro de 1972. O conjunto foi ainda prolongado pouco depois, descendo ao longo da falésia com novos apartamentos e piscinas e, alguns anos depois, foi adquirido pelo Grupo Pestana, sendo hoje o Pestana Carlton Hotel.
