The Hyena Man is the oddest sight in Harar, Ethiopia.
Supposedly, the Hyena Man is the latest in a long line of guys who've taken on the responsibility of appeasing the local hyena population by hand feeding them every night.
Denied these treats, the hyenas are certain to make life hell for Hararis during times of drought, or so they say. Who am I to argue with that?
The highlight of the evening for me, cat person that I am (as if skulking hyenas weren't enough) was a well-fed, healthy-looking cat who calmly went among the hyenas looking for tasty morsels.
One would expect the hyenas to fall upon the cat immediately and devour it, but that wasn't on the agenda. My take is the cat and the hyenas are acquainted and have worked out an arrangement that gives the cat a safe conduct pass during the feeding session.
I bet, though, the cat makes sure to be inside the gated courtyard after the food is gone and the spectators have departed.
