"An Ironclad Union Defeat in Charleston Harbor. On April 7, 1863, nine Union ironclads attacked Charleston’s Confederate defenses, including Forts Sumter and Moultrie. During the battle, Confederates fired over 2,000 artillery rounds while Union ships fired only 154. After 2 1/2 hours of combat, several Union ships were damaged and the Union Navy was defeated, leaving Charleston Harbor under Confederate control."
