aid to havecarried off 140,000 subjects of the Republic, ceasedwhen the Doge and the surviving councillors made avow to the Virgin Mary to build a shrine in her honour.Designs were at once begun by the leading architects,and, as an earnest of what was to come, a temporarywooden sanctuary was constructed on the chosen site,a bridge of boats was thrown across the entrance to theGrand Canal, and on the 28 th of November the noblesand people of Venice, headed by the Doge, went in aprocession from St. Marks to hear Mass in the nucleusof the magnificent church we now see. The designs of Baldassare Longhena were chosen,and during the forty following years Venice remainedtrue to her vow, and spared nothing to enhance theglory of her * Madonna della Salute. THE DORSODURO it is approached, that we may well hesitate beforespeaking with disparagement of the work of the lateRenaissance. Mr. Edward Hutton in Venice andVenetia truly remarks: « We have seen and sufferedVenice without the Campanile ; but who could imagineher without the Salute ? If that fell, Venice herself wouldseem to have suffered some irremediable change. Ithas stood there only since the seventeenth century, yetit seems as inherent a part of the city as St. Marks. The absence of colour in the whole series of build-ings is not missed as it would be on the exterior ofSt. Marks, for it is generally seen across a widespace of water, and nature supplies to a great extentwhat art has not attempted. But, except for a fewpictures, not many of us would go a second time tolinger or to pray inside the Salute. The absence ofcolour makes us long to be out in the sunshine oncemore, and enjoy from her steps the russet tones of theDucal Palace and the gilded pinnacles of St. Marksacross th
