We showed ourselves, in this matter, more logicaland more systematic than the French. Owing to this unreasonable adherence to theold manner of constructing vaults, the french archi-tects never properly developed the system of rib-groining. To the end of the middle ages they continuedto use only transverse, and diagonal ribs,—the oldquadripartite arrangement.
