he traveller. The same, however, cannot be saidof the Lake of Wallenstadt which, next to Lucerne, is probably one of thefinest in Switzerland. The northern shore rises upwards in lofty cliffs ofrugged grandeur, whilst in the south the scenery is rich and fertile. From Zurich to Lucerne by rail, for some portion of the route the sideof Lake Zug is skirted, and at Cham station there is a good view of thelake itself. The country is richly wooded and very picturesque. At Lu-cerne the tourist reaches the most beautiful lake in Switzerland, and at itsfar end are the Rigi and Pilatus Mountains, less celebrated for their heightthan for the views they afford of the surrounding country. Ranges ofmountains, including the Bernese Oberland can be seen, and ten lakescounted from its summit. The railway up the Rigi offers a means ofreaching the top without trouble ; and as it travels slowly may be practicallyconsidered very safe. The scenery on the lake is very beautiful, being at I ° a L5^ —e?^.

r^ 7^ •^ Switzerland. once grand, varied, and delicate. Steamboats make the tour of the lakeseveral times daily. The ascent of the Rigi can be readily made by walk-ing ; in such case the steamer should be left at VVeggis, whilst if it is in-tended to use the train, the point of debarkation is Viznau, which is theterminus of the Rigi railway. In the town of Lucerne there are two pointsspecially worth being seen; one is the famous Lion of Lucerne, sculpturedout of the sandstone rock in memory of the Swiss Guards who perished atthe outbreak of the French Revolution, and who died defending the royalfamily of France. Near here is also the Glacier Garden, which containssome curious examples of glacial actions, and a collection of objects fromthe Swiss lake dwellings. Those visitors who desire to see the Rhone Glacier, can do so by passingover the Furca Pass. To effect this, leave Lucerne by steamer to Fliielen,thence to Hospenthal by the St. Gothard route.
