Description
English: An island of reeds Reeds used to be harvested in this area until up into the 20th century when it became unprofitable. Most of it is now a Natural Nature Reserve and the islands provide shelter for nesting birds. The marsh pastures are grazed by cattle. This view was taken from the Wherrymans Way long distance footpath which leads past here. This section of the Wherrymans Way links Rockland St Mary with Surlingham (or vice versa). The Wherrymans Way is a 35-mile long distance footpath following the route of the Broads trading wherries between Norwich and Great Yarmouth. The route takes its name from the wherry – a large cargo-carrying barge whose black sails used to be a common sight on these waters. Ten circular village walks branch off this path along the way.
