Summary
editDescriptionAncient beech pollard in Queen North Wood, New Forest - geograph.org.uk - 123500.jpg |
English: Ancient beech pollard in Queen North Wood, New Forest. This old beech pollard is found within the old woods between the North and South Bentley Inclosures, south of Fritham. The woodland management practice of pollarding was once common in the forest, as a way of providing food for the deer or firewood. Pollarding of oak and beech in the Forest was prohibited by the 1698 Inclosure Act, which means that this tree is probably a survivor from the 17th century. |
