Italiano: PIAZZA DEL PLEBISCITO
Conosciuta più comunemente come piazza del Papa, è una delle quattro piazze principali di Ancona (le altre sono piazza della Repubblica, o del Teatro, piazza Roma e piazza Cavour. Di esse è la più antica: fu aperta nel XV secolo; sino all'espansione cittadina seguita all'unità italiana fu la piazza centrale della città, la "piazza grande" in cui si incontravano i confini dei tre terzieri: Porto, Capodimonte e San Pietro. Oggi è il centro di quest'ultimo rione. La sua forma è singolare: rettangolare molto allungata; inoltre particolare è anche il fatto che comprenda vari livelli, collegati da due rampe e da scalinate. Su di essa si affacciano alcuni tra i più importanti monumenti cittadini: il Palazzo del Governo, con la sua torre, la chiesa di San Domenico e, svettante sul ripiano al centro della piazza, la statua di Clemente XII, il papa che, novello Traiano, fu responsabile della rinascita del porto nel Settecento. |
