Object history
  • The collection L. P. Larsen Copenhagen The paintings have been in the possession of the family and have not been offered for sale since L. P. Larsen acquired them in the first half of the 20th century. Lauritz Poul Larsen (1862-1949) was office manager in the Danish Ministry of Agriculture. He was the son of politician and agronomist H. P. L. Larsen and inherited a fortune when his parents died. This enabled him to start his collection of Danish art, which is described in "Kunst i Privat Eje", Volume I, 1944 p. 290-293. All the great Danish Golden Age painters were represented in the collection including Eckersberg, Lundbye, Købke, Skovgaard, Marstrand and Kyhn. The collection is praised in the following quotation from the above-mentioned book: "L. P. Larsen's collection is characteristic of the collections that were formed around the turn of the century by showing real knowledge of the Danish art of painting in the 19th century. Most of the paintings in the collection are small in size but bought on the basis of an educated and highly developed cultural sense."
