Так называемый Звенигородский чин – один из самых прекрасных иконных ансамблей древнерусской живописи. Чин состоит из трех поясных икон – Спас, Архангел Михаил и Апостол Павел. Чин мог входить в иконостас как княжеского Успенского, так и соседнего Рождественского собора Саввино-Сторожевского монастыря, ктитором которого был звенигородский князь. Живопись Звенигородского чина отличает особая чистота цвета, благородство тональных переходов, светоносность колорита. Свет излучают золотые фоны и нежная плавь светлых ликов, чистые оттенки охры, голубые, розовые, зеленые тона одежд. Иконы происходят из подмосковного Звенигорода, когда-то входили в семифигурный Деисус. Сохранившиеся три иконы были обнаружены реставратором Г.О.Чириковым в 1918 году в дровяном сарае близ Успенского собора на Городке во время обследования экспедицией Центральных государственных реставрационных мастерских древнего княжеского храма Юрия Звенигородского, второго сына Дмитрия Донского.
