DescriptionAnemopsis californica - Flickr - peganum (3).jpg |
My brother Ian asked me if there was such a thing as a water magnolia when he saw this. He wasn't far off - both Anemopsis and Magnolia are members of what the plant taxonomists have come to call the Palaeodicots - that branch of the flowering plants usually considered the most primitive, and actually sister to the monocots rather than the typical (eu)dicots. The flowers of the Anemopsis and the Magnolia certainly look similar and it's nice to speculate that this design was perhaps once very popular with Cretaceous insect pollinators. Appearances are deceptive though. The Magnolia flower is indeed just the one big flower but the Anemopsis is related to Houttouynia and Saururus and it's 'flower' is made up of lots of small flowers gethered into a spadix-like structure, and with large white bracts behind in place of petals. Another case of convergent evolution? This one is in a not very glamourous plastic box, waiting for me to build it a pond. |
