(b. 1267, Vespignano, d. 1337, Firenze) No. 14 Annunciation: The Angel Gabriel Sent by God 1306 Fresco, 150 x 195 cm Cappella Scrovegni (Arena Chapel), Padua The Annunciation takes place in the lower section of the fresco on the lunette above the chancel arch, in the two spandrels flanking the chancel arch. Each of the two protagonist, Gabriel and Mary, kneels within a shrine which has been set at an angle to suggest that it faces the other; for this reason we see only the exteriors and a small part of the interiors of the two structures. Of all the buildings in the Paduan frescoes, these shrines are most reminiscent of the architectural settings at Assisi, because of the curtains, and the complicated consoles supporting the balconies. The self-possessed figures of Gabriel and Mary, especially the latter, have been given an extraordinary solidity. The foreshortening of Mary's arms has been carried out with a precision that anticipates the technical accomplishments of the fifteenth century.
