Français : Étude du groupe de gauche pour les Sept chefs devant Thèbes, peinture présentée par l'artiste au Salon de 1827.

Ultime chef-d’œuvre d’une carrière hors-norme, Les Sept chefs devant Thèbes (huile sur toile ; 1826 ; H : 3,23, L : 4,25 m. ; Angers, musée des Beaux-Arts), présenté au Salon de 1827, constituent l’œuvre la plus ambitieuse de l’artiste. Le sujet martial est prétexte à la représentation de deux nus masculins, l’un de face et l’autre de dos.

Ce dessin préparatoire présente quelques variations par rapport à la toile finale exposée au Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angers, témoignant du processus de création de l'artiste et de sa réflexion menée autour de chaque détail. Concentré sur le dos du protagoniste principal dont l'attitude est une reprise du Romulus des Sabines de David, ce dessin témoigne de l'attrait appuyé de Mongez pour la cambrure masculine.
