Description

Anna Coleman Ladd plaster face casts (Reeve 012596), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Photograph of Anna Coleman Ladd's studio, showing a collection of plaster face casts of mutilated French soldiers. These casts were used to create sculptural prosthetics.

Anna Coleman Watts Lad was an American sculptor, trained in Paris and Rome. In late 1917, Ladd founded the American Red Cross "Studio for Portrait-Masks", where she worked with disfigured World War 1 soldiers to provide prosthetic pieces from thin galvanized copper, which was then painted to look like the soldier's skin and affixed with a string or glasses. She earned the Legion d'Honneur Croix de Chevalier and the Serbian Order of Saint Sava for her work. She passed away in 1939.
