The unshedded pier at the foot of 56th street has been leased to the ItalianLine in connection with its 57th street pier and plans for a freight shed have beencompleted by the departments engineers. The pier at the foot of West 55th street was entirely reconstructed for approx-imately 500 feet of its length by departmental force. The work was finished onSeptember 18, 1915. This pier has been leased to Furness-Withy & Co., and plansfor its shedding are under way. The unshedded pier at the foot of West 23rd street is in process of improvementby the construction of a shed, the work being done under contract. Fabricationof the necessary steel was begun on October 25, 1915. Part of the preliminary workfor the pier structure has been completed. It has been leased to the American-Cuban Steamship Company. The City has owned for a number of years a large and important pier at Stapleton,Staten Island. This pier has been used simply for a small amount of open wharfage.

One-half of it was entirely unavailable for pier purposes because obstructed by thesouth rack of the municipal ferry. Operation of this ferry having been discontinuedit was possible to remove the rack. During the year the structure has been leasedat the rate of $42,000 per annum to a new and important transatlantic steamshipcompany which is under contract with the City to improve the pier by the constructionof a suitable freight shed. A large portion of the ferry rack was removed by thedepartments own force and the remainder of the work has been done by contract.The importance of this improvement to the Stapleton section of Staten Island canhardly be over-estimated. Two important freight platform improvements have been underway in theBorough of Brooklyn. At the foot of Fulton street the Department, through itsown force, has been constructing a platform which will provide 205 feet of wharfageroom.
