week. On a pleasantSunday afternoon in summer, the throng entering the building be-tween half-past two and half-past four passes in at the rate of 1,200an hour. In my last report mention was made of the success of the effortsof a friend of the Museum living abroad to obtain permission of thechurch authorities to have a cast taken of the stairway of the pulpit inthe Siena Cathedral—a permission which was never before given toany one. This friend was Miss Anne Hampton Brewster, formerly ofPhiladelphia, whose lamented death at her home in Siena occurredMarch 31st, 1892, only a few days after all of the several parts of thecasting had been completed. This beautiful work has since been re-ceived at the Museum. It has been set up and attached to the pulpitafter the manner of the original in Siena. Another important work mentioned in my last report—the copyof the Columbus Doors designed by Randolph Rogers for the NationalCapitol, obtained by Mr. John Struthers from the National Museum in

Munich, where the original model is preserved—has been received andset up in the Rotunda. To Mr. Struthers the Museum is also indebted for a collection ofsome 470 pieces of Nuremburg wrought-iron, chiefly of FifteenthCentury workmanship, which he had the rare good fortune to securethrough the aid of the Director of the National Museum in IMunich. Perhaps the most important work of the year has been the estab-lishment of the Department of American Pottery and Porcelain. Thevaluable historical collection of Mr. E. A. Barber was purchased andpresented to the ^luseum by Mr. John T. Morris as a nucleus for othercollections, and Mr. Barber kindly consented to act as HonoraryCurator of the Department and assist with his advice and influence inits development. Numerous additions have already been made to the original col-lection, and there is every reason to believe that many others will bereceived when the plan of the Museum is better known.
