English: Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 259 North 5th Street at Havemeyer Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, November 2022. A work of local architect Francis Himpler, this magnificent church was completed in 1870 after a year of construction and is a fine example of the Lombard Romanesque style of architecture with its stout massing, preponderance of semicircular arches, and the stark color contrast between the red brick and the light-colored stone trim. Perhaps the most eye-catching decorative feature of the façade, however, are the numerous corbel tables: arcaded ones delineate the horizontally-stacked levels of the façade and extend above narrow windows on the side elevations, while raking ones in a sawtooth pattern figure on the front gable and frame other sloping surfaces. Note also the niche reliefs above the main entrance, a triptych which depicts the church's namesake event as told in the Gospel of Matthew, with Joseph at right looking on as the Archangel Gabriel appears before Mary. Founded in 1864, Annunciation held Mass for its first half-dozen years in a temporary wooden church located across the street from the current building. Initially German in ethnic constitution, Annunciation has since 1914 been the home church of the Lithuanian-American community in the Brooklyn Diocese. The parish merged in 2019 with the neighboring Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and still holds three Masses a week: one each in English, Spanish and Lithuanian.
