ANOUAR BRAHEM QUARTET-THE ASTOUNDING EYES OF RITA Kwam hij in mei 2008 nog met een trio-bezetting naar LantarenVenster, nu presenteert de Tunesische Ud-speler Anouar Brahem met een geheel nieuw kwartet het materiaal van zijn nieuwste, op het ECM-label verschenen, cd The Astounding Eyes of Rita. Deze cd is een verrassend, atypisch en persoonlijk album geworden. Klaus Gesing en Björn Meyer kennen beiden een muzikaliteit die jazz overstijgt. Een dans van donkere warme geluiden met de afgebakende drums van de libanese percussionist Khaled Yassine. Dit album is opgedragen ter nagedachtenis aan de palestijnse dichter Mahmoud Darwish. Brahem lijkt met zijn unieke spel en zijn bijzondere composities de ud – de Arabische luit – opnieuw uitgevonden te hebben. Traditie en innovatie lopen als een rode draad door de muziek van de Tunesische ud-speler Anouar Brahem. Als hij tien jaar oud is, begint hij aan zijn studie aan het conservatorium in Tunis. De jonge Anouar verbreedt zijn muzikale horizon, maakt kennis met Mediterrane, Indiase en Iraanse muziek, en wordt vooral gegrepen door de jazz. Hij besluit als ud-speler niet enkel als begeleider van zang te willen spelen en gaat solo ud-concerten geven. Hiermee breekt Brahem met oude tradities en krijgt zijn geliefde instrument de hoofdrol. In de jaren tachtig ruilt hij Tunis in voor het opwindende Parijs. Daar schrijft hij voornamelijk muziek voor film en theater. Halverwege de jaren tachtig wordt hij aangesteld als dirigent van het Muziekensemble van Tunis en keert hij terug naar zijn geboortestad, waar hij een frisse wind laat waaien door naast traditionele muziek veel aandacht te besteden aan nieuwe stijlen en composities. Met zijn vernieuwende aanpak weet Anouar Brahem de traditionele Arabische muziek te vermengen met moderne muziek en brengt hij musici uit alle muzikale windstreken bij elkaar.
