Description
English: Scenes from the history of Chester Cathedral. Dedication memorial window to Frederick ANSON in Chester Cathedral He was dean of the cathedral for 28 years. Born 23rd March 1772 and died 7th May 1867. Coats of arms:
  • Top row (l to r):
    • Attributed arms of Hugh Lupus, 1st Earl of Chester, founder of the Abbey of St Werburg, which later became Chester Cathedral (Azure, a wolf's head and neck erased argent).
    • Arms of William Jacobson (1803-1884), Bishop of Chester (1865–1884). Arms of See of Chester impaling Argent, a chevron gules between three trefoils slipped sable on a chief of the second an estoile of eight points or
    • Attributed arms of "Earl Ranulf" (Ranulf le Meschin, 3rd Earl of Chester (1070−1129), nephew of Hugh Lupus).
  • Middle row (l to r):
    • Arms of James Arderne (1636–1691), Dean of Chester 1682-1691 (Gules, three crosses-crosslet fitchée and a chief or).
    • Arms of Edward Copleston (1776-1849), Dean of Chester 1826-8 (Argent, a chevron engrailed gules between three leopard's faces azure), with chevron incorrectly shown as azure.
    • Royal arms of King Henry VIII, who dissolved the Abbey and replaced it with the Cathedral.
    • Arms of Henry Phillpotts (1778-1869), Dean of Chester 1828–31 (Gules, a cross argent between four swords erect of the last pommels and hilts or).
    • Arms of George Davys (1780–1864), Dean of Chester 1831-9 (Sable, a fess ermine between three cinquefoils argent).
  • Bottom row (l to r):
    • Plantagenet dimidiating arms of Earl of Chester (Azure, three garbs or) Arms of the City of Chester. Edward, Lord of Chester, but without the title of earl (1239–1307) (became King Edward I in 1272); title Earl of Chester also held by Edward II and Edward III as princes, and by all future Princes of Wales. Dimidiation was the early form of impalement.
    • Arms of Frederick Anson, Dean of Chester 1839–1867 (Argent, three bends engrailed and in the sinister chief point a crescent gules)
    • Arms of the See of Chester
