Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves Historic House, Lisbon, Portugal Material : Oil on wood Inv : CMAG 914/915 BIOGRAPHY Frequenta a Academia portuense de Belas-Artes, de 1864 a 73, concluindo o curso de Pintura de História. Aluno de Cabanel e de Yvon na École des Beaux-Arts, em Paris, onde se estabelece com bolsa do Estado, tal como Silva Porto, contacta com a estética da escola de Barbizon, assiste à grande retrospectiva de Corot no ano da sua morte, 1875, e eventualmente conhece as novas propostas impressionistas, em exposição nesse ano. Em 1876, viaja pela Bélgica, Holanda e Inglaterra, com Silva Porto e fixa-se em Roma, até meados de 1878, onde se relaciona com Artur Loureiro e regressa a Paris ainda nesse ano. Termina o curso com a pintura Céfalo e Prócris. Em 1880, já no Porto desde 79 e depois de viajar por Madrid e Sevilha, participa na fundação do Centro Artístico Portuense, na Arte portuguesa e na organização das exposições de Arte do Ateneu Comercial do Porto. Foi nomeado académico de mérito da Academia portuense, ainda em 79, e em 81 é um dos fundadores do Grémio Artístico. Lecciona a cadeira de Desenho Histórico neste ano, e em 95, a de Pintura Histórica, ocupando o cargo de Director em 1886. As suas funções de professor e de figura activa nos meios artístico-culturais, foram marcantes para a divulgação de uma estética naturalista, dedicando-se particularmente ao retrato e à pintura de paisagem, nos arredores do Porto e zonas minhotas. Por vezes incompreendido pela crítica, o que justifica a sua diminuta projecção, face ao sucesso de Silva Porto, Marques de Oliveira apresentou propostas de grande modernidade, referências a Manet e Boudin, que abandonou, para se ajustar ao gosto pela cena de género e a um cromatismo melancólico, normalmente aceites com êxito.
