Title |
Portrait Medallion of Émile Diaz |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: Émile Diaz (1835-60) was the son of the painter Virgile-Narcisse Diaz de la Peña (1808-76), Barye's friend and colleague in the village of Barbizon. Like his father, Émile trained to become a landscape painter; tragically, he died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. Two medallions were made: one was set in the face of Émile's tomb at the cemetery of Montmartre in Paris; the other, this piece, was presented by the grieving father to his friend and patron, Alfred Sensier. |
