English: Antoine Chintreuil, painted by his lifelong companion and protégé Jean Desbrosses, c. 1872-1873. Frédéric Henriet in the book La vie et l'oeuvre de Chintreuil (1874), page XXXVIII, calls it a portrait "of a very intimate character. Chintreuil is represented in profile, his features and body emaciated by suffering. Slumped in a large armchair, the poor artist consults a drawing; perhaps it forms some new painting project. Seeing him still cling to the future with this stubborn hope, we cling to this consoling thought: The art that has filled his life will at least have hidden its last hour from him."
