Description |
This vessel started life in 1831 at the yard of John Wood & Co. in Port Glasgow, where it was launched in late 1831 and named John Wood. Operated by the City of Glasgow Steam Packet Company, Glasgow. In 1840 it was sold to a partnership in the duchy of Holstein (then a part of Denmark) and named Christian VIII in honour of the Danish king. In 1848 the ship was sold to the insurgents of Schleswig-Holstein and joined their navy as the Bonin. The peace settlement required it to be handed over to the Royal Danish Navy in 1852, where it became the Mercur. Hulked in 1857 as the transport barge Styktransportpram Nr. 2 and broken up around 1870. Sources: clydeships.co.uk, jmarcussen.dk (in Danish). |
