In the Belvedere, Vienna. 3i6 ANTONIO DA CORREGGIO from various sources, and set forth collectively, the history ofCorreggios mythological pictures no longer presents the apparentdifficulties and contradictions that confront us in the biographies whichattempt to trace the career of each work separately. Io, a nymph of Thessaly, and priestess of Juno, was returningfrom visiting her father. Jupiter saw her, and, enamoured of heryouth and beauty, made himself known to her as lord of the universeand of thunder, and declared his passion. Alarmed at his overtures,Io fled in terror across the plains of Arcadia ; but Jove pursued andovertook her, enveloped her in a dense mist, and, transforming himselfinto a cloud, or rather concealing himself in one, embraced her. It isthis supreme moment of the drama which Correggio has rendered withan art and sentiment of extraordinary force and novelty.
