Nederlands: Standbeeld van Sint-Nicolaas (Sinterklaas), patroon van de Meerseniers, werd opgericht in 1707 in het midden van het pleintje.
Het beeld toont de legende van de drie theologiestudenten, die op hun weg naar Athene door een herbergier werden vermoord. De herbergier borg het vlees van de studenten op in een ton met pekel. Enige tijd later bezocht Sint Nicolaas dezelfde herberg, en droomde ’s nachts van de misdaad die de herbergier begaan had. Nicolaas riep de herbergier en bad tot God, waarna de studenten weer tot leven werden gewekt. English: Statue of Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) at the St-Nicolaasplaats in Antwerp. The statue was erected in 1707.
The statue recounts the legend how a terrible famine struck a Greek island and a malicious butcher lured three little children into his house, where he slaughtered and butchered them, placing their remains in a barrel to cure, planning to sell them off as ham. Saint Nicholas, visiting the region to care for the hungry, not only saw through the butcher's horrific crime but also resurrected the three boys from the barrel by his prayers. |
