In 1996, I made my first-ever visit to Washington, DC, using the Election Day long weekend, while I was a college student in New York City. I spent four days in the capital, and my emphasis was primarily to cover various topics that I had learned in my high school history and government/civics classes. This exhibit deals with the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, which was a rare moment of cooperation between the US and the USSR in the space race. The experience gained from this mission came in handy after the Cold War; instead of each side developing its own space station and space shuttles from scratch, the US and Russia combined their strengths together into using the US Space Shuttle with the Russian Mir station, then later built the International Space Station together. The Apollo is a test unit, the Soyuz is also a nonfunctional test unit donated by the manufacturer at the end of the Cold War, and the connector is the backup for the actual mission. The actual Apollo used for this mission is located at California Science Center in Los Angeles. This exhibit area gained many new artifacts concerning the Soviet space program, with the end of the Cold War, the dissolution of the USSR, and the declassification of many Soviet space program secrets. When I took this photo, the USSR was still a fresh memory, with its dissolution having taken place less than 5 years prior. |
