Rares sont les témoignages encore in situ des luxueux décors de cabinets où l'or abondait au milieu du XVIIe siècle à Paris. La beauté de notre panneau et le caractère " éducatif " du sujet nous a naturellement fait penser au décor des appartement du Grand Dauphin aux Tuileries dans lequel Jean-Baptiste de Champaigne utilise le même fond d'or. Selon Jean-Claude Boyer, notre panneau peut être rapproché des travaux réalisés par Pierre Mignard vers 1662-1664 à l'hôtel parisien du financier Barthélémy Hervart (détruit) 1. Le décor du " salon d'Apollon ", composé d'un Parnasse accompagné de plusieurs tableaux " sur des fonds d'or " représentant " les principales actions " du dieu, reste aujourd'hui partiellement connu grâce à un modello 2 et à un petit groupe de rapides copies dessinées (identifiées par Jean-Claude Boyer à la Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal). Etant donné son support et son format, l'Apollon et Esculape pourrait être un des deux dessus-de-porte de cette pièce qu'un contemporain tenait pour " la plus belle Chambre qui soit à Paris pour les Peintures ". Rédigé par Monsieur Jean-Claude Boyer. 1. L'ancien hôtel d'Epernon, détruit et reconstruit par Hervart en 1660, puis hôtel d'Armenonville fut acheté par Louis XV pour y installer l'Hôtel des Postes (la Poste centrale), lui-même reconstruit entièrement en 1886. Il était à l'angle des rues du Coq-Héron et Jean-Jacques Rousseau (l'îlot d'immeubles ayant été modifié depuis), occupant le côté sud de la rue Verderet, aujourd'hui disparue. 2.
