Notes | Barthélémy d'Hervart, intendant des Finances puis contrôleur général, acheta en 1657 au duc d'Epernon son hôtel de la rue Plâtrière et entreprit de le faire agrandir, réaménager et décorer dans les années 1660. Pierre Mignard de retour de Rome depuis 1658, fut sollicité pour ce chantier où il œuvra aux côtés de Louis Le Vau Michel Anguier ou encore Charles-Alphonse Dufresnoy . Mignard peignit deux des plafonds du premier étage, 'L'Apothéose de Psyché' dans le cabinet et 'Apollon et les Muses' dans le salon. Ces décors furent détruits au milieu du XVIIIe siècle mais nous en connaissons plusieurs descriptions anciennes et un ensemble de dessins anonymes conservés à la bibliothèque de l'Arsenal qui en sont des copies tracées sur place. Notre toile présente peu de différences avec le dessin copiant 'Apollon et les Muses' et constitue à n'en pas douter un modello pour ce décor, esquisse aboutie destinée à être présentée à son commanditaire. Cette composition semble avoir été importante dans l'œuvre de Mignard : il la reprendra en 1692 lorsqu'il travaillera au décor du Salon ovale du petit appartement du roi à Versailles, pour lequel le musée du Louvre conserve plusieurs dessins préparatoires.
