English: Approaching Rhiwbach 'village' along the exit road There was a small shop on the site, but the womenfolk needed to do extra shopping at the weekend and would walk to Blaena' on Saturday afternoons when there was no quarry traffic on the tramroad. Likewise, except at times of periodic religious 'enthusiasm' the men would visit the fleshpots of Blaenau on Saturday evening and had to make their way back to the village. With the increasing weight of the dead hand of Welsh Nonconformity on social life, the fleshpots had to close at 9pm sharp, a practice which lasted until after WWII.
Returning shopper or reveller would come down the exit incline into Rhiwbach Quarry and across the waste runs down to the village. http://www.gtj.org.uk/en/blowup1/6529 |
