DescriptionApproaching the Jubilee Tower - geograph.org.uk - 615030.jpg |
English: Approaching the Jubilee Tower The last few hundred yards before reaching the summit of Moel Famau. The Jubilee Tower was built to commemorate the jubilee of King George III, who was then 72. ?6,000 was raised by public subscription to build it and a Chester architect, Thomas Harrison was commissioned to design it. His proposal was for a three stage obelisk, some 160ft tall. The foundation stone was laid by Lord Kenyon on the 25th October 1810, but the tower was never fully completed. On the 1st November 1862, a tremendous storm blew down the tower and despite a number of proposals for rebuilding, it remained derelict The tower now provides a shelter for people walking the Clwydians, and a perfect place to stop for a rest and a cup of tea and enjoy the view. |
