Ahora bien, a nadie le amarga un dulce. Y si se acerca un segundo macho, o incluso un tercero, pues mejor, así hay donde elegir. Las hembras de Argiope pueden acumular las espermatecas de varios machos. Incluso pueden discernir entre espermatecas de machos emparentados (2 Welke and Schneider, 2009). No obstante, las hembras muestran un curioso comportamiento: matan a los machos que intentan copular con ellas. Incluso se los comen. Aunque no está clara la causa de la permanencia de este comportamiento, algunos indicios parecen indicar que no se trata, precisamente, de obtener una alimentación adicional, dado el casi ridículo tamaño del macho. Y los machos exhiben también una curiosa estrategia, sacrifican sus pedipalpos, donde llevan las espermatecas, dejándolos insertos en los orificios genitales de la hembra. Los entendidos sospechan que así, los machos, aunque mueran bajo los quelíceros de sus mortíferas amantes, se aseguran de que ningún otro macho pueda “meter sus espermatecas donde no le mandan” (3 Schneider 2007). Al parecer, este último comportamiento sí es espoleado por el alto índice de canibalismo sexual presente en estas especies, esto es, el canibalismo promueve la autotomía de los pedipalpos por parte de los machos. Ello nos lleva, de nuevo, a la diferencia entre tamaños de macho y hembra. Y es que el dimorfismo sexual en estas arañas, podría estar asociado, también, al canibalismo sexual. Las hembras, mucho más grandes, depredan sobre los machos. De hecho, en Argiope bruennichii se ha llegado a documentar hasta un 80 % de capturas de macho en su primer intento de cópula (1 Fromhage – Uhl – Schneider, 2003). En ensayos con Argiope lobata (2 Welke and Schneider, 2009), la predación no superó el 50%. En ambos casos son porcentajes bastante elevados. Esto nos conduce a pensar que, quizás, la selección favorece a los machos más ágiles, a los más rápidos, no sólo porque puedan trepar más rápido y llegar primero, sino también porque puedan eludir su muerte fatal. Así pues, aquellos machos suficientemente ágiles consiguen trepar hasta la hembra antes de que ésta les dé caza. Luego, aunque acabe muerto, el macho tal vez consiga dejar sus pedipalpos insertos en los orificios genitales de la hembra. |
