English: Spanning more than 1,200,000 square miles (3,137,500 square km), The Arabian Peninsula earns the title of the largest peninsula on Earth. The interior of the peninsula is intensely arid and hot, while the coast tends to receive somewhat more precipitation. Most of the peninsula is so dry that it does not support agriculture and competition both for water and for arable land is strong. Farming occurs in some areas, particularly along the coast. The land is rich in oil and natural gas, and long coastlines provide multiple safe ports, allowing for export of the products.
Seven countries are found on the Arabian Peninsula. From largest to smallest they are Saudi Arabia, which holds the center of the peninsula, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. Parts of Jordan and Iraq also sit on the peninsula. The Red Sea forms the western and southwestern border, the Persian Gulf lies in the northeast, and the Indian Ocean on the southeast. On May 26, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite captured this striking true-color image of the Arabian Peninsula. |
