; withwhich, notwithstanding the extreme abundance of some of thespecies, our knowledge hitherto has been very superficial. Thegenus Phalangium, indeed, in their tracheal mode of respiration, subarticulated bodies, and exposed didactyle chelicerae, constituteone of the primary types of the great class Arachnida, being inthese respects intimately allied to the two other equally anomalousgroups, Chelifer and Solpuga; * neither of which have hitherto beensatisfactorily investigated. Of the great care bestowed upon thismemoir, I am able to speak from personal knowledge, although Iam not sufficiently acquainted with the minute details of theinternal anatomy of these tribes to offer an opinion on some of theresults at which the author has arrived. I trust that he will notconsider the subject as exhausted, especially as he has not given anyaccount of the early states of these insects. * These three types constitute the order which I have termed Adelarthrosomata.—Ent.Text Book, pp. 131, 145.

The two interesting additions to the genus Papilio representedin the annexed Plate, form part of a collection of insects with whichI have been favoured by Major Jenkins, and to whom I beg leaveto present the best thanks; both of my subscribers and myself, feeling convinced that they will consider that every addition madeto our knowledge of the beautiful productions of our distant territo-ries by the zeal of gentlemen resident in such districts, is a subjectof congratulation.
