English: This picture was taken in Possession Island (Crozet Archipelago) at the site named "the elephant seal pool". This picture was taken in december 2002 by Nicolas Servera. In the foreground, you can see two males of the subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) leaving each other after a confrontation. No real fight has happend. The border is marked by bigger rocks. On the left, the male is strutting along his territory. On the right, the male is staying on the border and seems to be watching two other males on the middle distance. In the middle distance, you can see two other males. They have watched the confrontation. Now, they seem to be strutting around their terreitories and watching closely their own females.
Français : Cette photo a été prise sur l'île de la Possession (Archipel de Crozet) sur le site nommé "La Mare aux éléphants". Cette photo a été prise en décembre 2002 par Nicolas Servera. Au premier plan, vous pouvez voir deux mâles otaries subantarctiques (Arctocephalus tropicalis) qui se séparent à la suite d'un affrontement symbolique au niveau de la frontière de leurs territoires. Aucun combat n'a eu lieu. La frontière de leurs territoires est matérialisée par de plus gros rochers. Le mâle de gauche s'éloigne de la limite de son territoire en paradant. Le mâle de droite reste au niveau de sa frontière et semble observer les deux mâles présent au second plan. Au second plan, vous pouvez voir deux autres mâles qui, après avoir observé la scène, semblent concentrer leur attention sur les femelles présentes sur leurs propres territoires. |
