Le 20 août 1944, des GI'S viennent d'accrocher un drapeau américain sur la façade de l'hôtel de ville détruit, en présence du maire d'Argentan M. Yves Sylvestre et du colonel Harry D. Mac Hugh commandant du 318th Infantry Regiment de la 80th US Infantry Division. A gauche un medic, voir casque et brassard de la Croix-Rouge.
