English: Arkose from the Pennsylvanian of Colorado, USA. (public display, Garden of the Gods visitor center, Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA)
Arkose is a siliciclastic sedimentary rock dominated by clasts of pinkish-orangish colored potassium feldspar. Arkose can be sandstone (~all sand-sized grains) or breccia (poorly sorted, with angular pebbles). The sample seen here is an arkosic breccia from a thick, Pennsylvanian- to Permian-aged unit in Colorado called the Fountain Formation. It represents an ancient alluvial fan deposit, composed of poorly sorted clastic debris eroded from the Ancestral Rocky Mountains. The type locality is exposures adjacent to Fountain Creek in the town of Manitou Springs in central Colorado. The Fountain Formation there includes arkosic quartzose sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, granulose sandstones, and breccias. The rocks are muscovitic in part. Stratigraphy: Fountain Formation, Pennsylvanian to Permian Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed (but possibly from Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA) |
