Description
English: Arms of Tennant of Chapel House in the parish of Kilnsey, Yorkshire: Ermine, two bars each per pale gules and sable charged with three bezants two and one (Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry, 15th Edition, ed. Pirie-Gordon, H., London, 1937, pp.2217-8, pedigree of Tennant of Chapel House), with a crescent for the difference of a second son. Engraved on reverse of a 1747 miniature portrait of John Tennant(1722-1790) of Chapel House in the parish of Kilnsey, Yorkshire, aged 25, Barrister of the Middle Temple. (Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry, 15th Edition, ed. Pirie-Gordon, H., London, 1937, pp.2217-8, pedigree of Tennant of Chapel House). Admitted to St. John's College, Cambridge in 1739 and was called to the Middle Temple in 1745, where he is recorded as Master of the Bench in 1779. He was buried at Conistone in Yorkshire in 1790. (Catalogue entry Ellison Fine Art, London, UK) 4.30cm high in a gold frame, the reverse engraved with the Tennant coat of arms. Provenance: The Albion Collection: Bonhams, 22 April, 2004, lot 25.
